As a resident and taxpayer of the District of Sechelt, I am concerned at the recent expenditure of public monies on a party and bonuses for exempt staff who received extra duties during the recent municipal strike.
I do not for a moment question that these public employees worked under difficult conditions. Such work expectations in extraordinary times, however, goes to the very core of what it means to be in management.
One has to question a $5,000 bonus for a 21-day strike for managers already making six-figure incomes as well as managers partying on public money while other employees suffered financial hardship. A more normal practice would have been to give managers time off in lieu rather than cash bonuses.
I can not see this current senior management behaviour adding positively to returning the municipality to a productive and harmonious workplace. This money would have been better used on the many worthwhile projects currently suffering from financial restraint.
Where is the public accountability on all this, Mr. Mayor?
