Re: “Speak up against AAP,” by Tom McCaughan, Letters, May 28.

In response to last week’s “Speak up against AAP” letter to the editor, I would like to provide some of the reasons why the SCRD has moved forward with an Alternative Approval Process to take out a $7.25 million loan to fund the water meter program.

When we last held an AAP on water metering, the feedback from the community was to make more progress on water supply.

Since 2018 we have made significant strides in water supply projects such as the Church Road well field, the Langdale well field and the upgrades to our treatment system at our Gray Creek water source.

The issue at hand here is not the progress on water supply, it’s water use and water loss that is going undetected on properties. That matters because properties with a leak are using four times the amount of water compared to properties without a leak.
Water meters provide the community valuable information about their water use and they also support efforts to locate and notify homeowners of hidden leaks.

We can then work with homeowners to ensure those leaks are fixed.

What good is it if we are spending millions of dollars to increase our water supply, only for that water to never make it through peoples’ taps but instead to be lost through leaks?
