Two types of governance

Letters

Editor:

Thank you for printing my letter, “Getting things done” (Aug. 17). A friend and probably others took it as a response to Mayor Milne’s letter, “Mayor defends record” (Aug. 10). In fact, I have not yet read Mayor Milne’s letter.

My letter concerned the wider topic of governance. It seems there are two distinct types of electors and governors. One group of electors simply elects government to do as it sees fit and isn’t really concerned about the methods it uses. The other group of electors sees government as a servant of the people and wants most of the people to be consulted about what is to be done and how it will be accomplished.

A constant criticism against the latter method of governance is: “Nothing gets done.”

I support the latter method of governance at all levels: municipal, regional, provincial, and federal. For me, process comes first. Things do get done using this method – everything from family affairs to world affairs. It’s called democracy.
