Re: “For the love of trees” by Ben Foster, Letters, Feb. 16.
The small, quaint neighbourhood in Roberts Creek where I live has also suffered from a lack of consideration for its residents and the surrounding environment. To our dismay, a half-acre lot that was fully treed with mature fir and cedars was purchased, clear-cut and the timber was sold for profit in less than nine months. The lot was then immediately put up for resale and sold for a further significant profit of $100,000.
No consideration was given to the home on the adjacent lot, which resulted in total exposure and a probable decrease in the value of the property. Because there are no regulations to protect property owners from what appears to others as commercial logging in a residential area, we feel the SCRD should create bylaws to prevent one from profiting from this practice at the expense of others.
Inadequate tree-cutting bylaws exist in the SCRD in comparison to most other communities. I am urging the SCRD to fully review them and make necessary changes – for the love of trees.
