We are blessed with some wonderful hiking trails on the Sunshine Coast.

One of them is a magical loop through the forest, an extension of the Big Tree Recreation Area accessed to the south of Trout Lake from the highway.

As a regular hiking group, this trail has been on our radar for years; however, we have watched the section around Crowston Lake deteriorate thanks to negligent campers who basically use this area as a toilet. Human waste, bits of toilet paper, empty beer cans and general garbage litter the access road and forest trails at Crowston Lake. It’s disgusting.

First a plea to those who use the wilderness to treat it with respect, and secondly, a request that whatever local body looks after this area do a clean-up and perhaps post some signs to dissuade this unacceptable practice.

Back country campers know that if there is not a privy toilet available, you dig a cat-hole six to eight inches deep away from water, campsites and trails.

Please, be responsible. This is our backyard!
