Transparent Liberals

Letters

Editor:

It’s obvious there has been zero thought given to implementation or cost when Trudeau’s shoot-from-the-hip campaign promises are viewed. We have seen the last of first-past-the-post voting. Yeah, let’s see how that goes and what is the cost of the committee and the current ridiculous surveys. (Would you rather your MP spend more time in the constituency or sitting in Parliament? Translation is: should your MPs have Fridays off?) Clear and transparent questions?

Then there’s the cost and the spin on the PM’s promise to increase the number of Syrian refugees from 10,000 to 25,000 for $100 million. “In June 2016, the government quietly released ‘preliminary costs’ for the program, and pegged the costs 350 per cent higher than Trudeau’s campaign pledge. That way, six months later when the updated financial figures became available – and Trudeau only went 285 per cent over budget – the Liberals could pat themselves on the back and celebrate” (Toronto Sun, Nov. 25).

Now, Immigration Minister John McCallum could claim the government saved $70.3 million from the cost of Syrian resettlement. This is how the Trudeau government can claim a $70.3-million saving, when the actual cost was $284.7 million more than planned. Yes that’s, uh, clear and transparent, eh?
