Time for MPs to be leaders

Here we go again.

It appears more than likely that for the second time in a little over a year, Canadians will be heading to the polls for a fall election in November.

The last one, you may recall, took place in October 2008 with the Conservatives winning a second minority government. In our riding of West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country, Conservative John Weston reclaimed the seat for the Conservatives, beating then member of Parliament Blair Wilson.

It's been an interesting year, to say the least. The economy appears to be on the rebound, funding has been pouring into the riding with money going to small craft harbours up and down the Coast, to the District of Sechelt for improvements to the tennis courts in Halfmoon Bay, to the Sunshine Coast Regional District for transit improvements.

Have the Conservatives done a great job? No, but they haven't necessarily done a bad job either, which is why the Federal Liberal Party's suggestion of a fourth Federal election campaign within five years borders on insanity.

Canada needs stability more than ever right now. The role of the opposition is to hold the Conservatives' feet to the fire. The Liberals have done that and continue to do so, so for Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff to pull his party's support for the Conservatives in parliament now is certainly troubling.

Rather than forcing another election, spending millions of dollars that could be used in other areas, such as health care, education, crime prevention, job creation and continued improvement of the economy, the Liberals, the New Democrats, the Bloc Quebecois and the Conservatives should be putting their differences aside and offering constructing criticism to keep the Conservatives in line.

Another election is just a big waste of time, energy and money and most likely will not solve anything, except a few changes in the number of seats and another minority government led by either the Conservatives or the Liberals.

It's time for our politicians to show some leadership and do what is best for our country - working together in Parliament and moving the country forward, united and strong.
