This letter is a call-out to all people who enjoy Mount Elphinstone. 2010 has been a rough year for the mountain.

BC Timber Sales and Island Timberland have caused many more clear-cutting scars - impacting creeks, drinking water, habitat and the natural beauty.

It is time to work towards a plan for the whole mountain, otherwise logging will take place piece by piece until all that is left is tree farms and a few small parks, and sooner than later we will have another devastating mud and debris slide like the one in 1983. This is also an opportunity to become leaders, to devise real eco-forestry options that employ people and preserve ecosystems. It is time to question the public spokespeople for the logging efforts - they are speaking from a place of preserving profits not protecting livelihoods, ecosystems or something sacred. For us to have the power to create change, we need many people to get involved - in whatever way they are capable and comfortable doing.

Educate yourself, write a letter, talk to your neighbour, walk in the forest, buy sustainable harvested wood and, if necessary, sit on a blockade. It's all better than regretting not doing anything when it is too late.
