The Sunshine Coast is all the things we love: close to nature and away from the hustle and bustle. Although we must realize that we live next door to the largest growing, most densely populated and expensive city in Canada. As people discover that, “hey, there is this great community across the water,” we should not be surprised with the resulting growth. The influx of new people to the Coast contributes to a thriving economy that is good for any community. This is progress.
This growth coupled with climate change highlights the ineffectiveness of our current water supply. This should be a priority for our whole community. We can no longer wait to see what the next set of politicians will do. The public needs to know what the options are. There has to be a progressive body that is actively researching new sources of water, costing those options and then reporting back. Some options have already been mentioned: Rainy River, Gray Creek or Clowhom River. Are those viable options? And who is looking into them? Where are your voices?
Surely our leaders and decision makers can see that water meters are not the answer. And sticking a “straw in a sippy cup to get a drink when the days are dry” makes our community look very inadequate. This really cannot be our future. Please get your head out of the sand. We cannot have development without making huge strides toward improving our water supply today. Yes, upgrades do cost money, but give us some options!
