Third world roads

Letters

Editor:

Thank you, mayor and Gibsons council, for clearly demonstrating that the backs of your voters and taxpayers are indeed strong enough to build private enterprise upon. I’m particularly impressed with the new roads being laid down in a few lucky neighbourhoods, and that the potholes on the month-old road – yup, potholes – are being patched with pavement. Kind of like patching polyester with silk.

Chipseal has really improved the overall small-town look we’re all so fond of and it will contrast beautifully with the sparkly, no-expenses-spared George Hotel. It’s endlessly entertaining to look out my window, past my brand new car with the rock chips in it, to watch mothers attempt to push strollers along the road surface. Another bonus of chipseal is the inside family time it’s awarded us, because as council is aware, you can’t rollerblade, scooter, play street hockey, or use a walker or wheelchair on this surface. Meh, who needs exercise when you can drive? The mayor is asking for our patience. Ummm, huh?

During your election campaigns, what was that about maintaining and building on a healthy and active community? Oh, that’s right, the lovely semi-natural waterfront path along Winegarden Park (budgeted for a costly upgrade?) has been expensively paved for our use. We could walk there as a family, only there’s a new sign warning that our dog’s feet will be burned in warm weather. Seriously.

If you want to protect your property values and – sadly – the accessibility and activities on your streets, I encourage townspeople to take a tour of our neighbourhood behind the firehall in Gibsons. Grab a coffee (with a lid), take a drive and be prepared ... this could happen to you!
