The importance of choice

Letters

Editor:

Thank you for the beautiful story on the death of Syd Valentine.

As a former hospice nurse, it’s wonderful to finally see people being legally able to choose how, when and where they will die. People often confuse wanting to die with the choice of how to die. People with terminal illnesses don’t “want” to die. Their disease has made that choice for them. But after diagnosis, it is so important for them to have as much autonomy and choice as possible.

It seems like Syd, as well as her family and friends, had a beautiful experience, with much shared love. I hope I am as lucky when it’s my turn.
