Editor:
In the Coast Reporter, Oct. 3 article on Gibsons Elementary, “Students start late, school unfinished,” you have painted a picture from only one viewpoint. What is missing from this article are quotes from the many parents and teachers who are delighted with the quality of classrooms and very pleased to have students in a new, inspiring environment.
On a major project, when challenges are faced, timely communication is the steepest hurdle. On Day 6 of the school year, likely just as your article was being written, the parents of Gibsons Elementary received the first school newsletter of the year with a whole page titled Q and A addressing many of their questions and concerns. Principal Luporini has been responding to parents’ questions daily throughout the start-up of school. No parent could say his or her concerns have not been heard and addressed when possible.
In a few short weeks, we will have a beautiful completed school. Yes, the school is not there yet, parts of it are not accessible, and the contractor’s timelines have been a disappointment. In the meantime, students have safe access to a bright new learning environment, and many parents have expressed happiness that the new school is available now and are waiting to celebrate its full completion soon!
Your article focused on some opinions and missed those of parents who appreciate the quality of their children’s school and the enthusiasm of their children’s teachers.
We have appreciated a balanced approach in your reporting of educational issues in the past and hope this helps your readers see a clearer picture of the good news story about Gibsons Elementary.
