Thanks for helping the kids

What was lost has now been found - well, replaced actually.

What was lost has now been found - well, replaced actually. Thanks to the generosity of a Vancouver-based production company, the kids at Roberts Creek Elementary School will have a brand new sound system waiting for them when they return to school on Tuesday.

You might recall back in June when we first reported some callous individuals gained access to the school and made off with the sound system - a sound system that many parent volunteers and PAC members had fund-raised diligently to purchase.

It was a major loss for the school, as it would be for any school.

A local resident contacted his friend in Vancouver and they began to ask around, enquiring with other contacts in the entertainment industry to see if the stolen goods could be found.

When nothing surfaced, the company, Pro Show Rentals Ltd., decided to donate equipment to the school.

This is fantastic news for the school and the students. It's also another example of the private sector helping out someone in need. These types of things happen a lot and usually they go unrecognized. But thanks to a few people, we get the chance to say thanks for helping the kids out.

School officials are also blown away by the gesture and they plan to recognize the generosity shown by these individuals at an assembly on Tuesday. The students themselves will be working on a special thank you later in the year.

Slow down in school zonesSpeaking of back to school, a reminder to motorists to slow down and watch your speed in school zones.

Students head back to school this week, and that means more traffic on our highway and side streets, more children walking home and school buses on our roads.

We shouldn't have to remind motorists to pay more attention while out travelling, but after what we witnessed this week, we guess it's time for a driving refresher course.

On more than one occasion, we saw many motorists travelling at high rates of speed, passing cars on Hwy. 101 illegally, not stopping at crosswalks and tailgating. With driving like that, it's just a miracle no one was hurt or killed.

Let's all have some common sense while driving and slow down. Arriving a few minutes late makes more sense than causing an accident.
