These are matters that should be in the forefront of tax considerations by municipal councillors and regional district directors in these insecure times.

Put people before projects.

Society is in the throes of a pandemic. Many residents have lost jobs. Many residents have closed or severely curtailed their businesses. Residents are paying through the nose for food, gasoline and other products.

Residents do not want implementation of an expensive, daunting and aggressive work plan during a pandemic.

Residents do not want additional staff hired to handle proposed work projects that prudently should not be implemented during a pandemic.

Residents want tax moderation, and implementation of essential projects only, during this challenging time, not items from a wish list.

As Plato wrote in The Republic, moderation is a virtue. It is harmony among reason, spirit and desire. Desire must be tempered by self-restraint, as must tax increases. When society returns to the new normal and the economy has recovered, other considerations could then be discussed.
