Take action on illegal dumping

The article "Illegal dumping a growing concern" (Coast Reporter, May 8) states that if someone spots a large accumulation of illegal waste and wants to bring it to the landfill, they can call Cathy Kenny, the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) solid waste management co-ordinator, to get a pre-approval to use the program 'Good Samaritan.' They will be asked to photograph the dump area and pull out any identifying pieces of garbage with name, addresses or phone numbers on them so potential offenders can be found and fined.

Then, in the May 22 issue, a letter from Fred Carter states: "I came across a newly dumped pile of garbage. I was immediately able to find several pieces of mail with the same name and address on them. I took pieces of this mail to the police station in Gibsons and the police officer said he could do nothing for me, even if I was able to get a phone number attached to the address."

I plan to talk to the SCRD and the RCMP, but I am writing this to alert anyone else who finds an illegal dump and is not aware there is an action they can take.
