Symphony in time

Letters

Editor:

The late ’40s and early ’50s. The Royal Albert Hall, London. Beethoven night. An enthusiastic crowd in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s. A sparkling of teenagers. The conductor raises his baton. Beethoven’s Fifth. The skilled musicians respond.

2018. A crowd of 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. A number of 90s. A hall in Sechelt. The conductor raises his baton. Beethoven’s Fifth. The skilled musicians respond.

Notice the difference. An enthusiastic crowd, mostly in their 70s, in Sechelt. An orchestra of professionals in London. An orchestra of equally skilled but older musicians in Sechelt.

When did it all change? The Beatles, I suppose.

Congratulations to the Coast Symphony Orchestra. May it survive forever.
