Sechelt Garden Club members have donated $500 to kick off the fundraising efforts for the Sechelt Downtown Business Association’s Periwinkle Lane Project 2021. Not able to direct funds to venue rental, events, speakers, etc., club members chose to help make our town more walkable and welcoming with a donation, flowers and greenery for downtown and Periwinkle Lane to help local business and lift the spirits of our residents.

The Sechelt Garden Club’s director of community projects, Penny Lyle, and her team have been supporting the Sechelt Downtown Business Association (SDBA) for the past five years helping to beautify our downtown. Projects include creating a garden and trimming hedges in Cowrie Lane and planting over 18 planters in and around downtown. They also added a splash of colour to our parklet project with hanging baskets. They volunteer their time and garden expertise to give our downtown a little colour and greenspace for all to enjoy.

The Periwinkle Lane Project, led by the SDBA, needs your support to help improve the lane by adding greenspace, safety lighting, and artwork. The SDBA has partnered with the Sechelt Garden Club, RCMP, Sunshine Coast Arts Council, Sunshine Coast Association for Community Living, Arrowhead Clubhouse and RainCity to clean up the alley and install art murals along buildings and roadway to bring vibrancy to the space. The SDBA hopes to utilize this new space for major events such as Oktoberfest as well as bring more events to our downtown such as food festivals, artist markets and other events to help attract people to our downtown.

The SDBA is reaching out to our businesses and community asking for donations or to volunteer their time to help beautify Periwinkle Lane so people can feel safe using the laneway in the evenings as well as enjoy local artists work and greenspace when visiting our downtown. The SDBA has received donations from several businesses already including Charthouse Lawyers who have offered to match up to $5,000 in donations from our local businesses.
