SSC had sensible plan

Letters

Editor:

Re: “Right call on SSC” by Nancy Leathley, Letters, April 13.

It is apparent that Ms. Leathley could not have been to any of the information meetings and workshops hosted by SSC over the past several years. If she was there, she did not speak up to express her negative views, and she would be aware that SSC had committed to providing their own sewage treatment facilities.

I have been at all of their meetings, and don’t recall hearing any negative comments. On the contrary, the support from those in attendance was almost universally positive, and enthusiastic, with many suggestions for the kind of housing and facilities that would most meet the needs of the community.

I suppose Ms. Leathley regards a totally accessible waterfront, with many public amenities, such as a much-needed paddling centre, as “giving nothing back to Sechelt businesses and residents.” It seems she would prefer the current zoning for 1,600 homes and a golf course with little, if any, public waterfront access.

The SSC plan called for sensible, gradual development over a 25-year period. Rest assured that during that timeframe the current suburbs of Sandy Hook and Tuwanek will be linked with Sechelt, possibly in a much less desirable way than called for in the SSC plan.

Ms. Leathley’s letter shows an obvious lack of knowledge of what the SSC proposal is all about. Instead, it appears mostly politically motivated. I too hope that Sechelt residents will remember those councillors who voted against this wonderful development plan, without giving the public a chance to have their say, and turf them in the November election.
