My water meter was installed early in March. Since then I more or less ignored it, but I recently received a letter from the SCRD informing me of a possible water leak at my address; my usage was 1,500 litres per day above normal usage for two people. I booked a visit from a water conservation technician and we quickly discovered a one litre per minute leak in my (seldom used) irrigation system. There was no visible indication of a leak on my property.
I corrected the leak on the spot by shutting off the system supply valve. The technician’s data logger showed that the leak was present from day one of the meter installation, and heaven knows how long before that. One litre per minute equals 45,000 litres per month! Count me in as an advocate for water metering.
