So much for democracy

Letters

Editor:

Though long since convinced that nothing ever gets done by mayor and council around Sechelt, we’ve been proven wrong! Having been absent from the local media for a few weeks we have just learned that the Sechelt Sustainable Community (SSC) development has been shut down with no public input – none. Three years of back and forth with lip service being paid by Mayor Milne and those councillors who support him – and then wham, it’s done, with no public input. Wasn’t this the same mayor who promised more public involvement? I believe that the SSC development would have a positive impact on my decision/desire to continue living in Sechelt as I age and, at the very least, I wanted the opportunity for myself and for others in the community to be able to voice our opinion. Isn’t that the democratic way?

I find it quite ironic, considering the affordability and senior housing issues in our community, that the driftwood hut on the beach in Davis Bay is receiving more attention than the SSC development. As of Monday morning, 81 per cent of the readers who responded are in favour of the driftwood hut remaining (I’m one of them) compared to only 63 per cent who are in favour of the SSC proposal going to a public hearing. Where are our priorities?

I’m pretty sure that the driftwood hut in Davis Bay is going to be very crowded once all of those requiring affordable housing and seniors care move in. Ah well, nothing that an extension won’t fix. That is assuming the mayor and council will approve a development permit!
