Dean Clement's letter (Coast Reporter, Aug. 23) asks why those who've accepted BC Hydro's contention that smart meters are safe and cost effective should pay extra to accommodate those of us who've decided to not accept one of these devices.
If Dean had read some of the articles on the Citizens for Safe Technology website, he'd likely have found the answer. Even if he were unsympathetic to those with electro sensitivity, he would surely agree that prolonged interruption of power would be catastrophic.
An Aug. 19 Homeland Security Newswire is titled "U.S. power plants, utilities face growing cyber vulnerability." A referenced article by Power Grid International informs that, "Designing an effective cyber security system for an electric utility is particularly challenging." Dean, please envision the devastation that would ensue after an attack on a North American power grid. Those who've challenged the safety and cost effectiveness of smart meters are doing you a favour.
