What a disappointment to read not one but two letters encouraging curtailment of bringing Syrian refugees to Canada. To cite as reasons the potential financial burden and the security risk appears to me to be a thin veil masking a mindset that callously disregards the appalling circumstances in which those refugees have been forced to exist. It resoundingly exemplifies the ancient Greek fable of The Dog in the Manger.
In composing this rejoinder to those letter writers, I have considered many words that are antonyms to those describing the disposition of most Canadians – e.g., kindness and compassion. For you, the word that rises to the top is “small.” Your letters show you to be small in spirit. Canadians will get over the cost and the risk; we always have. It will be more difficult to suffer those among us who demonstrate such humanitarian poverty.
