It seemed like a simple, reasonable request to Gibsons council Tuesday night: can they tell the developer of The George to add a clause in his insurance to explicitly identify and cover damage to our aquifer? Isn’t it a prudent, non-partisan request? Not to our council, apparently.
We’re told experts have examined the issue and determined they can manage the risk. Mind you, a different set of experts reached the opposite conclusion. They recommended no one dig down at depth. What are we to do?
The experts are saying that digging into the Gibsons aquifer carries a risk. One set of experts says it is a manageable risk, the other two don’t like taking that chance. Seen in that light, asking for additional coverage would have a bracing effect on the developer. One becomes more thoughtful, more prudent when money is on the line. And when it comes to our aquifer, being more prudent and thoughtful is exactly what is needed.
