Sidestepping cow dung on Nov. 8

Views

My little granddaughter came to visit me this summer. One of the highlights of the visit was a trip to an automated dairy to see the cows and witness them being milked by a robot. She loved the animals but hated the smell. She spent the 15 minutes we toured the barn with her nose firmly pinched.

During the weeks of watching what my sister-in-law terms “political porn” – aka the U.S. election – it was inevitable someone would say, “I’ll be holding my nose and voting on Nov. 8.” How did what is arguably the strongest country on Earth come to that point?

Over the past few days Trump’s over-inflated ego has landed him in more cow dung than any dairy barn in the country sports. Like many sociopaths, he refuses to take any responsibility for anything he’s ever said or done. What amazes me and many other people following this debacle is the support the man continues to garner.

You can understand his wife and family sticking by him, but really, are the rest of the Americans defending him so blinded by his money and power they can’t tell right from wrong? No amount of reasoning seems to penetrate the wall of ignorance surrounding the man.

I think if he were only shallow, it wouldn’t be such a worry. But combining that with a lack of knowledge and general gall doesn’t bode well for their country or ours.

On the other side of the ticket is Hillary Clinton. I think she’s also blessed with more than a fair share of ego. It takes a pretty strong belief in self to face the world after some of Bill Clinton’s peccadilloes. (One could say in some ways he’s an urbane version of Trump.) However, the female Clinton has a good grasp of the world beyond the United States’ borders. She appears to realize that being born poor and wanting a better life for your family isn’t a mortal sin. She won’t be building fences anytime soon.

There you have it. For my money, voting for an orange-faced, macho moron would be much like touring the cow barn and breathing deeply. I can only hope our wonderful neighbours sidestep that disaster.
