Re: “SCRD directors set to declare immediate water emergency,” April 26.
Donna McMahon deserves a big shoutout for highlighting the hypocrisy of our elected officials. We have “an immediate water emergency;” however, we cannot put any holds on development. Although we are obligated on existing permits, there is no reason why temporary rules cannot be put in place for the future.
It is hard to see how using taxpayer money to hire someone to continue to nag the electorate will help and not hinder. Developers will keep adding more users as long as they can, while elected officials tell taxpayers to “smarten up.” Seems pretty basic: while the SCRD and municipalities are continually working to increase water usage, users will respond negatively to Emergency Declarations.
