Shoulders for Lower Road

Letters

Editor:

I have read with interest the three recent letters to the editor regarding pedestrian and cyclists’ responsibilities. My sentiments align with the arguments put forth in all three letters: “Cyclists give warning,” July 7, “Rules of the road,” July 14, and “Exceptions to the rule,” July 21.

However, I’d like to address the issues pertaining to all forms of travel along Lower Road in Roberts Creek. I’ve been walking, cycling and driving this stretch of road since 1960. Like so many others, I’ve seen exponential traffic growth along this roadway. Currently only one short section of Lower Road has a wide enough shoulder to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians – and this “bike lane” exists only on one side of the road.

I too grew up with the understanding you walk on the opposite side of the road. Several decades ago it was a peaceful stretch of road and we followed that rule. Now, you have little choice. With large buses pushing you to the side when vehicles are approaching them, and with a fairly steady stream of cars moving past (many exceeding the speed limit), it is a whole new realm from those early days. Pedestrians including parents with strollers, dog walkers, people in wheelchairs and electric scooters, essentially have to share the shoulder on one side of the road.

To have a major push to widen the shoulders on both sides of Lower Road would greatly improve the safety for all and would make the experience of travelling along this lovely stretch of road that much more pleasant.
