Sharrows are best

There are many challenges to being a cyclist on our Sunshine Coast highways – terrain, weather, roads and sometimes poor driving skills. The easiest and most effective way to assist motorists and cyclists to safely navigate our shared roadways is with the use of “sharrows”.

The markings consist of chevrons (arrows) and a bike silhouette. For visibility during darkness and adverse weather, the sharrow or similar road signage is preferred. These painted roadway signs are inexpensive and standard throughout North America. Vancouver uses them extensively, as does the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) on several highways I travelled. MOTI has co-authored bike lane design manuals with the sharrows prominently displayed. I have been forwarded an email from a MOTI traffic engineer with the standard grid for sharrows. Everyone uses sharrows and road markings, except MOTI on our Sunshine Coast roads.
