Last week while riding towards Gibsons on Lower Road, I was buzzed intentionally by the driver of a pickup. This happened about a half-kilometre from Joe Road towards Camp Byng. My “give me more room gesture” caused him to slow down, allowing him to express his rationale for the buzz: “I pay road tax and you should ride in the dirt.”

I guiltily told him I had three cars (thinking by his logic he would see that he should drive in the dirt). He didn’t get it and drove off with no better understanding of the issue.

It is that season again where the road-sharing rules must be reviewed.

Bikes should ride on the right side of the lane a safe distance from the edge in a predictable way.

Vehicles should drive in the right lane and pass other road users safely. That might mean slowing down and waiting if oncoming traffic does not allow crossing the centre line to create at least a 1.5-metre gap.

Perhaps the RCMP should be proactively clarifying the upcoming spring riding season especially with the dramatic increase in ebike use.
