From meeting reports and letters to the editor that have appeared in Coast Reporter over the past few months, I’ve received the impression there may be Gibsons voters who are reconsidering the eagerness with which they endorsed changes to the Town’s OCP that made it easier for gigantic projects to slide through. It’s a subtle discontent, in the way that pitchforks can be subtle, but it’s still perceptible.
I also noticed that the giant-project proponent for whom the OCP was retooled submitted an updated management plan recently as part of a water lease application to the province. “The only upland property which is not owned by George Gibsons Development Ltd.,” wrote the applicant, “is Winegarden Park, which is owned by the Town of Gibsons. As can be seen in the supporting documents from the Town of Gibsons, they are committed to surrendering Water Lease area 237789 to George Gibsons Development Ltd. for the expansion of the new Marina.”
For those who chose mayor and councillors based exclusively on perceived willingness to surrender things to the George developer, I suppose this presents no problem. But I wonder whether, among those who voted for the current quintet, there are any to whom the passage of time has brought second thoughts about the wisdom of giving up the water lease in front of the park for what this proponent calls “Phase 3.”
