Rise for Climate

Letters

Editor:

If you are concerned about climate change and want to do something about it, join us this Saturday, Sept. 8, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Davis Bay Pier for the Rise for Climate rally, a local gathering that is part of an international mass action organized by The Peoples Climate Movement
(peoplesclimate.org).

Bring your family, friends, drums and signs to add your support as thousands of rallies are held in cities and communities around the world on this day of action. Rise for Climate is a prelude to the Global Climate Action Summit Sept. 12 to 14.

The Summit is inviting local and regional leaders from around the world to make bold commitments that will help achieve the targets of the Paris Climate Agreement.

Real climate leadership must also rise from below. We have great collective power in our hands. Governments must be held to account and channel resources toward a rapid mobilization to build a green economy that will create thousands of jobs. People and justice must come before profits.

2020 is a threshold for meeting global targets to tackle the unfolding climate crisis. By acting together we can end our dependence on fossil fuels and preserve the biosphere we all depend on.
