Reference is made to the story about the deer that was maimed by loose dogs (Coast Reporter, Jan. 13), I would like to add that dogs should never be allowed to roam free without supervision, regardless of whether you live in town or outside of town.

I saw the horrible damage that these dogs had done to the small deer. My first reaction was anger towards the dogs, but it is really the owner of these dogs who is to be blamed for this terrible incident. After all, let's not forget that dogspossess a natural hunting instinct andmost breedshave the potentialto hunt if left unattended and given the opportunity and circumstances.

My family and I and many of our neighbours enjoy having deer and other wildlife in our neighbourhood. With responsible dog owners there is room for all of us, including people, pets and wildlife.

And remember, walking your large dog off-leash in town does not necessarily boost your image among fellow citizens. Unfortunately, not all people love dogs, and even a friendly lick or barking by a large dog can be terrifying to a small child who may not be used to dogs.
