Resistance to progress

Letters

Editor:

I wholeheartedly agree with Doug Hockley’s “Mired in Mediocrity” comments from last week’s letters.

Four years of ‘Do Nothing’ governance, masterminded by Mayor Milne, is drawing to an end.

By way of trying to understand this mentality, I revisited a lecture by Steven Pinker which I had recently viewed. He is a professor of cognitive psychology at Harvard University and in his latest book, Enlightenment Now, he suggests there is a correlation between intellectualism and a resistance to progress. He goes on to say that intellectuals find the American “can-doism” somewhat vulgar.

Since Mayor Milne has a PhD in Political Economy, and if we can, for the sake of this discussion, equate such academic achievement with intellectualism, then Steven Pinker has hit the nail on the head. Mayor Milne does not seek progress for Sechelt.

This logic, however, doesn’t explain the lack of progressive thinking from the majority of council – I’m still researching that one!
