Residents deserve choice

Editor: Mr. Butt (competition has benefits, Coast Reporter, letters May 28) is correct when he points out that a local Wal-Mart isn't necessarily a bad thing. No doubt there was vociferous opposition to London Drugs, Canadian Tire etc.

No doubt there was vociferous opposition to London Drugs, Canadian Tire etc. when they first applied to do business here, but how many of those opposing their presence now use these stores; rather a lot judging from the amount of shoppers one sees there.

We also have Starbucks, A&W, The Brick etc. so why not Wal-Mart? You cannot stop progress, whether it be for the good or for the bad. Obviously Wal-Mart is considered "the bad" by those who make sure their voices are heard, but nobody is forced to shop there and surely the residents of the Coast are entitled to a choice.
