Removing ice a big mistake

My 7-year-old was enrolled in the spring CanSkate program that was supposed to start next week. We received an email last Friday, March 19, informing us his lessons have been cancelled.

We originally signed my kid up for lessons at the Gibsons rink. We live in Gibsons. We planned our spring around dropping our son off at the rink. We have three children under seven years old, so as you can understand we have a lot going on. About a month ago we were informed our rink time had changed to Sechelt, so we would have to drive an extra 25 to 30 minutes to get to a different rink. The only reason we were able to keep him in the program at that point was because a friend offered to drive him.

We’ve spent money on skates. We’ve spent money on a helmet. We purposely didn’t enrol our kid in his other activity, karate, because he requested to learn to skate.

Now my kid won’t be skating, and now karate classes are full, so we’ve missed our spot. Most importantly now my kid has no community activities because of the SCRD board’s decision to remove ice from the Sechelt arena.

I’m more than upset. With the limited opportunities for children’s activities, especially during the pandemic, this was a huge mistake.
