Really, a cat bylaw?

Letters

Editor:

Does the District of Sechelt truly need a cat bylaw? I would encourage them to perhaps step up enforcement of our dog bylaws before they extend a currently unenforced bylaw onto other animals. I had a situation a couple of years ago with an aggressive dog approaching my young daughter in our yard. Upon investigating, the bylaw officer concluded that everyone who owned that kind of dog insisted that their dog never got out. The specific dog still comes around, but I’ve given up on a solution with the district. I now make sure that any time my daughter plays outside I’ve got a handful of rocks handy, or a big stick.

My cat, on the other hand, is a big wimp. She loves to run free, and has only brought home a snake and a mouse in the two years we’ve had her. What’s the current proposal coming forward, that cats must be leashed? Will the District then build off-leash parks where we can take our cats to play outside?

I love animals of pretty well all variety, but I really question the need, or usefulness, of a cat bylaw.
