Questions on recycling

Letters

Editor:

What am I missing here? Gibsons council is worried about food waste when we have a recycling depot that could shut down at any moment and all the materials that get deposited there will ultimately go into the landfill. Maybe we should be working to find a solution to this bigger problem. If the purpose of the compost is eliminating gases from the atmosphere then maybe whoever is in charge should take a trip down to the Langdale ferry terminal and watch the plumes of black smoke that come from the ferry stack while it idles in dock. Furthermore, if we are eliminating weekly garbage pickup and replacing it with biweekly pickup so we can have food waste pickup on the off weeks, why are we paying extra? The truck still only comes once a week whether it be for food waste or garbage.

Many Gibsons residents already compost and/or pay for private recycling from the former Direct Disposal, so why would we even need this service from the Town? It appears it is just another way to squeeze money from taxpayers. In addition why does Salish Soils get free composting material and the residents of Gibsons have to pay? Shouldn’t they be paying us for it? It’s not like they give the soil away. Who negotiated this deal? If they want our compost then we should be getting a percentage of the soil sales to cover the cost of the program. The residents of Gibsons need to speak up.
