Public safety disregarded

Letters

Editor:

Regarding the predictable and foreseeable destruction of the Seawatch subdivision and the lives of the 14 families who lived there, one fact is now indisputable. The District of Sechelt and the B.C. government have demonstrated that public safety is not important to them.

The evidence is factual. The local government of Sechelt authorized the development of the Seawatch site and then issued the building permits despite the fact that they had geotechnical reports that identified the risks.

Further, the district and the province did nothing to protect the safety of the families during the imposed evacuation, even though the district announced that its employees would not enter Seawatch because of the risk.

There has been no assistance or compensation for the 14 families since the evacuation. As the parents and grandparents of a family of four who lived in Seawatch, we urge all B.C. residents to join us and take action together now to prevent other families in our province from having their lives destroyed like the 14 families in Seawatch.
