Last week I wrote a letter to Coast Reporter (“Case of discrimination?”) about our son and his friend bringing a loaded truck through the ferry terminal in Horseshoe Bay. I asked if anyone else had the same experience of being asked if they were carrying cocaine.
Five kind and helpful Coast residents responded with the same explanation as the one we received from BC Ferries Customer Service: loaded trucks are always asked if they are carrying dangerous goods and the ferries’ example of a dangerous good is propane. All those who got in touch with me saw that the rhyming words sound similar enough that propane could be misheard as cocaine. Although our son couldn’t unhear the word he heard, we all agree it is a possibility that it was a miscommunication. All those who got back to us felt and hoped that BC Ferries doesn’t discriminate.
