There’s a lot of talk about politics playing a role in the decision-making that went into rejecting the SSC Properties development proposal, spurred on, I imagine, by the animosity during the 2014 election between current mayor Bruce Milne and former mayor and SSC co-owner John Henderson. What about the politics of Coun. Darnelda Siegers? She was mentored by Henderson and she was the only one who voted in favour of moving the proposal forward to a public hearing. She also voted to put SSC Properties into the urban containment boundary, contrary to the Official Community Plan, and despite the financial risk the district would take on in building costly infrastructure to service the development. She is also the only one who has, to date, declared her intention to run for mayor in 2018, and did so ages ago. Makes me wonder whose best interests she has at heart.
