My mum recently died from an aggressive form of cancer that was first noticed in late November. By Feb. 22, less than three months later, she was gone. This was one shock after the other, as happens sometimes with health problems, and we discovered just how much we didn’t know about dying in our community. It was terrible, but also it was about the best it could be because of the support of Gibsons’ palliative care team.
Without exception, from doctors through nurses and care aides, these people are truly exceptional: kind, personal, integrated, and dedicated. I take comfort in the knowledge that those suffering from terminal illness on the Coast have such a solid support system. They provided guidance for our family, comfort for our “Grandma Angie,” and a level of care that I’m convinced was as good as we would find anywhere (and better than most places).
These incredible people make a difference every day for people at the end of their lives and they should be celebrated! Thank you to Petrina, Joanne, and Lisa, to Paul and Carmen, and to the paramedics, care aides, and hospital staff! You are all amazing and we are all lucky to have you on the Sunshine Coast.
