I greatly appreciated John Gleeson’s editorial (“The freedom they died for,” Nov. 10) as it spoke to some of the problems I have with some Remembrance Day events. The language used of heroes and fighting for our freedom; and of course we are always the good guys waving our flag.
Language matters. Why do you think the War Department was changed to the Department of Defence? So many horrific and brutal wars, fought on so many false pretenses, followed by so many suffering the severe trauma of PTSD.
My dad, who is almost 88, still screams in the midst of nightmares from the grim and deadly battles he was part of in Korea as a Canadian in the American Army.
Yes indeed, we should be thankful for our right to question deeply any leader who wants to recruit more of our youth for yet another killing field.
