Organics feedback needed

Editor:

Our Sechelt landfill is close to full – there is no disputing this. A curbside organics pickup service is scheduled to begin for pretty much all of the Lower Coast. I would suggest it would be beneficial to have feedback from those in the pilot program area of Davis Bay before this begins to find out what has worked well with the system and what has not. I am interested to see how many in the pilot project area utilize this service and what the facts are.

As a resident in this pilot program area, I can say that the curbside organics pickup service is a major wildlife attractant and the bins are not bear-proof. A lot of the older homes do not have garages or lockable areas big enough to accommodate the bins and it takes serious effort to build something that is truly bear-proof. There will likely be a big increase in the number of “problem bears” that are killed due to this curbside pickup. Attracting bears only to shoot them is not acceptable. Is there a plan in place to deal with the residents who are attracting bears and creating problems?

Before spending all the money and implementing this system, I would like to see more thought put into this process so it is suited to Coast living and our communities invest in the best solution possible.
