Opinion: Coast donations to the convoy

We had some requests to look into the leaked GiveSendGo list of donors to the “Freedom Convoy.”

Analyzing the available postal codes with my meagre Excel skills (but I’ve got stubbornness on my side), it looks like there were at least 47 donations from Sunshine Coast postal codes (some donors gave more than once) who gave nearly $4,700 to the cause. The largest donation was $1,000, the smallest was $10.  Comments of appreciation and thanks accompanied many donations. From “We won’t be silenced, truckers you are our heroes, united we stand against oppression and tyranny. A life without freedom is not worth living.” And, “Thank you truckers for reinstating our Canadian pride.”

The leaked data made waves earlier this month as hackers accessed and released the names, email addresses and postal codes of thousands who made donations between Feb. 1 and Feb 10.

That there is support for the “Freedom Convoy” on the Coast is hardly news – we’ve had letters of support in this paper. Also, the “freedom rally” protests (which long predate this most recent confrontation) continue in Davis Bay weekly – and swelled to at least a couple hundred people as the convoy reached Ottawa and as that situation drew on in the capital and across the country.
