Let me see if I've got this straight: the District of Sechelt has convened a committee to advise and support Sechelt Innovations Ltd. (SIL), and that $350,000 has been tentatively approved to establish and operate SIL (Coast Reporter, July 26).

Yet Karen Peterson's group, which will presumably spend these scarce tax dollars, operates without the media present - with the mayor's enforcement?

The business interests in our community may well have a "fear of being quoted," as was reported ("Sechelt seeks business opportunities"). But, tough! You want to spend public money, you stand up to public scrutiny.

Politicians and journalists are both, by popular consent, given special rights and sanctions in our civil society: the first to govern, the second to inquire and report. This is basic 18th century political philosophy.

It is clear that in Sechelt, we are operating in a pre-modern world.
