With the current “lockdown” in place, the Sunshine Coast is in the appalling situation of being the only vacation spot available for over two million people in the combined Fraser and Vancouver Coastal health regions. No more Island(s), Interior, North, Whistler, but here sits the Sunshine Coast, just a ferry ride away and oh, so appealing to visit.

There is much evidence of this – the lower deck of the ferries filled with RVs, cars towing boats, car-top kayaks and boards on the highway make a mockery of the government “requests” for no travel.
We are a population of vulnerable older people who have (so far) kept the infection numbers manageable. It will not continue if the unimpeded, untested stream of people pours in from the entire Lower Mainland.

In these COVID conditions, we need to demand that all of those non-essential off-Coast vacationers be questioned and turned back at the ferry terminal. It is not fair to us to be the sole destination for two million (potential) visitors, and the summer season has not even begun to ramp up.
