This year, Occupy will be a presence at our local Canada Day parade.
The Occupy movement is made up of individuals with diverse backgrounds and political beliefs. Each Occupier has his or her own reasons for demonstrating. However, the basic frustrations are global in nature, as evidenced by hundreds of thousands of people like you and me pouring noisily into the streets of cities all over our planet. Some of us plan on Occupying the Canada Day Parade.
In a nutshell, here's why - we love Canada. We love our beautiful Sunshine Coast; we feel blessed to live here. We stand in solidarity with people far and wide who are leaving the comfort of their homes to stand together and be heard and to insist on positive change in the ways our world is governed.
I do not speak for the Occupy movement, nor for any other Occupier, but for me, it is no longer an option to sit by and witness my children's future become jeopardized by the actions of leaders who hold the interests of profit over the interests of citizens. This is intended to be a peaceful, positive, non-confrontational and optimistic event. On the streets of Sechelt on July 1, peace symbols and Occupy signs will join the waving Canada flags. Please give those of us who are Occupying a smile and a wave or come on by for a friendly, Canadian-style discussion. I don't know if there will be many of us or few. Maybe it will only be me, but Occupy will be there, standing on guard for Canada. See you at the parade.
