Editor:
I am very disappointed with the Coast Reporter for running your March 2 front-page story concerning Garry Nohr leaving the door open for another run at SCRD director. Mr. Nohr was elected director for Halfmoon Bay in 2005 and served as chair of the SCRD board from 2011 to 2017 and some constituents are concerned about who may replace him. My question is, why would they feel that way? What did this director and later chairman of the SCRD board do in 12 years to deal with the major issue facing the residents of the SCRD, other than close his eyes to it? The Stage 4 water restriction that the residents of the SCRD have faced in recent years has not been addressed and no solution has been put forth that will solve the problem in the foreseeable future. Mr. Nohr now states his priorities include “finding a solution to long-term and emergency water supply, waste management, roads …” Where has this director and recently SCRD chairman been for the last 12 years? Water restrictions are not something new, the population growth on the Sunshine Coast did not happen overnight. The role of chairman or member of the board of the SCRD is not a retirement pastime. It is a responsible position to serve the best interests of the residents of the SCRD. Clearly, this individual has not met his leadership and fiduciary duties to the people he represents. Why then do some of his constituents think he is capable of doing it now?
The SCRD board needs new representatives that will bring a breath of fresh air, transparency and who will deliver on the priorities that face the residents of the SCRD. The first priority for the SCRD board has to be securing a long-term water supply.
