The care and support that our province provides for people in need of long-term care suffers from a dearth of facilities and staffing shortages, inadequate recreational programs and poor communication between care home staff and residents’ families. There was not, however, anything lacking in the courtesy and kindness my husband, John Alvarez, received as a resident of Totem Lodge and later the Shorncliffe Intermediate Care facility in Sechelt. Despite the ever-present threat of a COVID outbreak (which fortunately did not occur at any of our Sunshine Coast care homes), the frontline workers there showed up for work consistently and did their best to take the place of the families who were no longer permitted access to their loved ones. I thank each one of them for their endless patience, compassionate care, humour and support.
