Regarding your Jan. 20 Question of the Week, “Would you like to see a Walmart on the Sunshine Coast?” my answer is an emphatic and repeated “NO!”
Walmart would kill off at least half of the already struggling local businesses.
It is a MONSTER organization, based on slave-like labour and terrible wages, both of the workers who make their merchandise, and of the workers who restock shelves, take cash, etc.
It is an abomination that would underprice all local businesses, provide crappy merchandise, much of which would end up in the landfill within a year – not to mention kill jobs.
If the band is in fact looking at bringing in a Walmart, why can’t they see that, and instead of bringing this horror story to Sechelt, build a series of affordable apartment buildings, giving young people an option to live here without having to stay with parents, or move to Vancouver to join the throngs who can’t afford the rental prices there?
