More water before meters

Letters

Editor:

I am writing about the Notice of Alternative Approval Process that appeared on page 2 of the June 22 Coast Reporter, under the heading of the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD).

The notice is about the SCRD taking out a 20-year loan to borrow $5,956,111 for water meters in the Sechelt area. It also states that if 10 per cent of the residents in the water service area fill out a form against the loan, then the SCRD will not go ahead with the borrowing bylaw “without obtaining the assent of the electors in a voting proceeding.” I understand that statement to mean a referendum vote.

I would like to ask why we are considering a loan for water meters while our water supply situation has not changed. Would it not be more prudent to ask for loans toward upgrading and increasing our current water system, rather than for water meters?

I have mailed my elector response form indicating my disapproval of this loan when we still have not dealt with the water supply shortage problem. Do we need water meters when there might not be any water for the meters to measure?
